international comparison guide
I hope you find this a useful guide - these are not exact, but will work for most people.
In General Terms sizes I-Q½ are considered as lady's sizes, and men's sizes R+.
Georg Jensen work on sizes 48-58 as lady's and 59+ as men's.
The British Wheatsheaf scale is our normal selling size, but if you know yours on a different scale we can convert.
Table of finger sizes
You may have worked out that the Circumference X 10 divided by Pi (3.142 ish) will approximate to Georg Jensen sizes, while the Europeans knock 40 of this measure so that lady's will not feel they have big fingers! (TRUE).
Thomas's ring sizes are based on a 3mm ring, where the ring width is greater it may be necessary to up the size. We will also tell our workshop whether the size is leading edge, center, or backedge. You see the diameter from the ring onto the stick covers a small range about half a size for a 3mm ring, but a wide 6mm ring could cover over a full wheatsheaf size. In this case we measure what is comfortable in ou 3mm ring set and instruct the workshops or ringmakers to make this the back edge size.
Further complications arise when looking at the profile of the ring, A flat inside ring or "D shape" will grip the finger tighter than a court shaped or rounded inside ring. A new develpment is about to hit the market with the cushion comfort designed interior. So you see when someone asks "what finger size am I" we can tell the actual diameter, but skill and judgment are needed to determine what size a particular ring will need to be made to suit that finger.
