1770-1844. The Danish born sculptor spent most of his active life in Rome, where he lived primarily from 1797 to 1838.
In Rome, he experienced his artistic breakthrough with his statue Jason (1802-1803, Thorvaldsens Museum) [which is reminiscent of Michaelangelo's David], which made him internationally known as one of the greatest sculptor of neo-classicism.
The two plaques, Dawn with its companion Night, were reputed to have been completed in an inspirational day.
